We are thinking of visiting England in October 2019, using Carlisle as a launching place for sightseeing in Cumbria. I had ancestors who lived in Alston and are interested in taking a day trip to Alston from Carlisle. I saw an ad on TripAdvisor for the South Tynesdale Railway leaving from Alston. Does the train return directly to Alston? How long would a round trip on the railway from Alston take?

It is only a short rail journey through the valley but they are working on extending it. You can stay on and go straight back or you can get off and go walking and get another train back but you must check the time table. It is worth a ride out just to take a step back in time on the steam train. The railwY does have its own web site so you can always check the news and any up coming events .
Is there any to do when you disembark at Slaggyford for a couple of hours?

Hi, the previous answer is pretty much correct but to add to it, there is an interesting pub about 20 minutes walk away called the Kirkstyle and can also be reached by continuing to walk alongside the railway beyond where the train stops to "Burnstones Bridge" then follow sign on the road side when you descend to the main road or walk down through Slaggyford village and ask (or google it) - also nice walk from the station to the right and follow a very quiet road into some great countryside. Hope this helps - cheers
