I had ancestors who lived in Alston and are interested in taking a day trip to Alston from Carlisle. I saw an ad on TripAdvisor for the South Tynesdale Railway leaving from Alston. Does the train return directly to Alston? How long would a round trip on the railway from Alston take?

It is only a short rail journey through the valley but they are working on extending it. You can stay on and go straight back or you can get off and go walking and get another train back but you must check the time table. It is worth a ride out just to take a step back in time on the steam train. The railwY does have its own web site so you can always check the news and any up coming events .
Q:
Is there any to do when you disembark at Slaggyford for a couple of hours?
A:
Hi unfortunately no there isn't you can walk on a further 4 mile or so to the viaduct which has amazing views. But slaggyford still worth the visit for the history and the scenery.
Q:
Do you have to book in advance or can you just turn up on the day you want to travel?
A:
You just turn up on the day. There's usually three carriages so plenty of room. Enjoy!
Q:
Is it dog friendly
A:
