We visited the island by private boat. There were more people and boats than expected, but it certainly wasn’t crowded. The island itself is a lot bigger than we thought, meaning you are very unlikel…Full review by Chandra S

Q:
is there anywhere to rent a boat versus a 90 min kayak trip?
A:
we took a pontoon boat to the island. No dock but the water is shallow and you can pull up on shore. Very primitive. Take snacks and lots of water. There is an outdoor restroom.

Anyone familiar with Pointer Scenic Cruises to the island from Big Fork? They say they take you around the island by boat and then onto the island for some hiking/picnic, etc. Also, does anyone have any other recommendations for boat tours to the island. We are coming from Kalispell. Finally, what time of day in late July is best to try and see the most animals? Thanks

How difficult is it to kayak to the island and what is the best launching off point and docking point? We have an inflatable kayak and are fairly new at kayaking. We would like to kayak over and then spend time exploring the island but were not sure how feasible this really is?

It takes me about 90 minutes in my sea kayak, but once when there was bad weather coming up I made it in 45 minutes, paddling really hard. The best launch point is the public dock in Dayton. I agree with the idea of finding a local to go with you, as they will know where the bay is for landing. There is a historical walk around pioneer houses and a large collection of botanical species to explore, some of which are quite rare, which you might not discover on your own.
