The Amish typically rely on horse-drawn buggies for transportation and do not operate their own cars or trucks but will ride in vehicles driven by people who are not Amish.

GILFORD TOWNSHIP, Michigan — A van carrying several members of an Amish community was hit by a pickup truck Tuesday, killing six people, authorities say. Five of the dead were Amish, WJRT Channel 12 reports. One person in the pickup truck also was killed.

The Amish community in Michigan is in mourning after seven died on the same day in two separate crashes 86 miles apart in the central part of the state.
