New Jersey canceled Tesla’s charging contract on the Turnpike with little public explanation. Applegreen was selected despite having far fewer charging stations and higher electricity rates. Tesla added 116 off-Turnpike chargers and remains open to negotiations with state officials.

The New Jersey Turnpike may be most famous for the oil refineries it passes through, but a different kind of energy has been spreading across it in recent years. The toll road’s eight rest stops are now home to electric car charging stations.

Applegreen, which was already operating restaurants and travel marts on the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, will now also manage EV chargers in the service areas.
