At the close of trading, the Sensex was down by 720.60 points, or 0.90 per cent, at 79,223.11, and the Nifty dropped 183.90 points, or 0.76 per cent, to end at 24,004.75

The BSE Sensex fell 614 points, or 0.77 per cent to close at 79,330.14. Nifty declined 168.80 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 24,019.85. This is even as 2,136 BSE-listed stocks gained against 1,499 that slid so far.

The trends on Gift Nifty also indicate a gap-down start for the Indian benchmark index. The Gift Nifty was trading around 24,190 level, a discount of nearly 92 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close.
