The fire, which caused “catastrophic damage” to the two-family home, does not appear suspicious, officials said.

State officials have identified the New Bedford man who was killed in a house fire on Monday. Alfred Martin, 88, of New Bedford, was named as the victim, according to the New Bedford Fire and Police departments, the State Fire Marshal and Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities on Tuesday identified a man who died in a two-alarm fire in New Bedford on Monday that may have started from smoking materials and electrical issues, officials said.

The man was found on the first floor, according to New Bedford officials. The fire chief said a few other tenants were injured and treated.

Arriving firefighters found heavy fire coming from the two-family home and used a ladder to rescue one person from the second floor. Three other people inside the home escaped the flames on their own,
