Lost in the shuffle of the political discourse surrounding the first days of the 119th Congress, vote for House speaker, and President-elect Donald Trump touting the idea of purchasing Greenland, a special election was held in Virginia on Tuesday for three seats in the state legislature.

Three special elections in Virginia will determine which party holds control of the State Senate and House of Delegates. Democrats are favored in two of the districts, both in Loudoun County, a Washington suburb. Republicans are favored to hold a rural State Senate seat west of Richmond.

Democrats won a pair of special legislative elections in Virginia Tuesday, allowing the party to maintain their narrow majorities in both chambers.
