JUPITER, Fla. • Matt Wieters, who has been signed to a minor league deal and will work out Thursday, will “compete” for the backup job to catcher Yadier Molina, according to manager Mike Shildt.

“Mo and (general manager Michael) Girsch and I have good dialogue and relationships,” Shildt said. “Mo has been doing this for a long time, and I trust his guidance and wisdom.
