Purple Heart Day. Every Aug. 7 since 2014 has been recognized as Purple Heart Day. It’s an unofficial holiday, so government offices, businesses and stock markets will be open.

The Purple Heart medal is awarded to U.S. military members who are wounded in service. It is the nation’s oldest military award, introduced by General George Washington in 1782.

He was awarded the Purple Heart that October, and in February 1945 the Marines snapped a photo of him shaking Maj. Gen. Thomas E. Watson’s hand as Tuttle received the Silver Star.
