Liu became the first American women’s figure skating world champion in nearly two decades, dethroning three-time defending champ Kaori Sakamoto with a brilliant free skate Friday night. Her program to a rendition of “MacArthur Park” by Boston native Donna Summer earned her a standing ovation, and allowed Liu to finish with 222.97 points.

Liu became the first American world champion since Kimmie Meissner stood atop the podium in 2006. Levito and Amber Glenn scored three spots for the Americans at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Skaters are stoked. Renderings for a new skate park are up in the Government Center, and the city is asking for feedback.

LI native Chris Patti is spearheading an effort to rebuild Riverhead's skate park, which had been dedicated to Patti's late best friend, Wesley Dean Ackley.

Sequim’s skate park is now named after Mark Simpson, a longtime advocate for the local skate community. Using a moniker given to Simpson from the skateboarding community with his family’s blessing, the skate park near the entrance of Carrie Blake Community Park will be known in city documents and maps as the “MarkeMark Simpson Skatepark.”

Malibu will start building a new permanent skate park next month after the city council approved a $4.1 million contract for the construction.

The Concord Skatepark Association and Concord Parks and Rec have partnered to fundraise and build a new skate park at Kiwanis Riverfront. The city recently secured a $500,000 land and water conservation grant that the group will have to match to get closer to the dream that the CSP has been working on since its foundation.

A new skate park is being constructed at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach and is expected to open in late April. The park will be approximately 10,000 square feet and cost approximately $1.4 million to construct. (This story was revised to add new photos.)
