Rubrics are a useful tool to help students understand teacher expectations and develop their own skills. But if students just see them as a way to get graded, the benefit is lost.
All of this, of course, assumes that the purpose of rubrics is to convey response. More often, however, they are used to enforce uniformity of evaluation—as a preparation to test-taking.
Excellent students use rubrics to dot I's and cross T's. Less savvy students use them as guidelines to improve ‘okay' performance. In other words, a major function of rubrics is EDUCATIONAL.
