Alabama lawmakers on Tuesday approved a ban on Glock switches and other conversion devices that convert semi-automatic weapons into machine guns, after a deadly year that included multiple mass shootings.

The law, which goes into effect immediately, targets devices that turn semiautomatic handguns into makeshift machine guns.

Gov. Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 116 on Wednesday to impose a state ban on illegal machine gun conversion devices in Alabama.
