The review of the high-profile murder case by George Gascón’s office began more than a year ago. But critics say the timing of the decision was political.

The penalty for two murders is 50 years to life in prison, but since the brothers were under the age of 26 at the time of the crime, Gascón said they would be eligible for parole right away under California law.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said Thursday he’ll recommend that a judge resentence Lyle and Erik Menendez nearly 30 years after the brothers were convicted of the murders of their parents – a recommendation that he said would make them eligible for immediate parole.
