Netflix will no longer release the Prince documentary helmed by Ezra Edelman. Prince's estate will instead "develop and produce a new documentary."

A Prince documentary in development at Netflix for five years has been canceled after the streamer struck a deal with his estate.

A nine-hour documentary exploring the life of Prince will not be released on Netflix, and a new film will be produced by the Prince Estate.

Though Edelman’s untitled documentary was already completed, Netflix announced on Thursday that it has “come to a mutual agreement” with Prince’s estate to keep the film from being released. As part of the agreement, the estate also now has the ability to develop a documentary of its own “featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive.”

A planned documentary about the life and music of iconoclastic pop pioneer Prince has been canceled. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix reached a mutual agreement with the singer’s estate not to release the series after the estate raised concerns about allegations of emotional and physical abuse against Prince by a former paramour.

Edelman’s nine-hour documentary about the music legend reportedly included allegations that Prince physically and emotionally abused his ex-girlfriends.

Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ezra Edelman, the project was in the works for five years before its recent cancellation.

The six-part Prince documentary is officially dead at Netflix. The streamer will no longer be releasing the Ezra Edelman project, according to multiple media reports. Instead, the estate will move forward on making a new documentary about the late legend.
