Sun Stones, Volcanic Eruption
Scientists Say a Massive Volcanic Eruption 4900 Years Ago May Have Trigged Strange Sacrifices of ‘Sun Stones'
Scientists Say a Massive Volcanic Eruption 4900 Years Ago May Have Trigged Strange Sacrifices of ‘Sun Stones' Archaeologists and climate scientists from the University of Copenhagen provided evidence of ritual sacrifices that collided with the massive volcanic eruption that made the sun disappear throughout Northern Europe.
Scientists Think Ancient ‘Sun Stones’ May Have Been Volcanic Sacrifices
Located on the southern end of the Danish island of Bornholm, these stones are flat pieces of shale featuring intricately drawn Sun motifs. Scholars now speculate that these stones might have been “sacrificed” due to a volcanic eruption around 2,900 B.C. that darkened the sky, likely causing crop failure and famine.
Volcanic eruption caused Neolithic people to sacrifice unique "sun stones"
Neolithic people on the Danish island Bornholm sacrificed hundreds of stones engraved with sun and field motifs. Archaeologists and climate scientists from the University of Copenhagen can now show that these ritual sacrifices coincided with a large volcanic eruption that made the sun disappear throughout Northern Europe.
Sacrifice of ‘sun stones’ may be tied to volcanic eruption, scientists say
Sacrifices of “sun stones” occurred around the same time a volcanic eruption in 2900 BC dimmed the sun throughout Northern Europe, according to a new study.
Neolithic Farmers May Have Buried These Mysterious Stones to Bring Back the Sun After a Volcanic Eruption
Over the years, a variety of mysterious engraved stone plaques have been unearthed in Denmark. The decorative artifacts date to around 2900 B.C.E., during the Neolithic period. Now, researchers have proposed a theory about the plaques’ origins: They suspect Neolithic farmers may have carved and ceremonially buried them after a volcanic eruption
