An illegal immigrant from Guatemala was charged in the shooting of a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper after he led police on a high-speed pursuit Jan. 12.

Gov. Bill Lee surprised many when he inserted an “illegal immigration agenda” into his proclamation for a special legislative session that will focus primarily on a controversial private school voucher proposal and disaster relief for counties struggling to recover from Hurricane Helene.

In its special session, the Tennessee legislature is taking on immigration bills, but not without some input from the public that caused state troopers to forcibly remove audience members.

Proposals include everything from incentives to local law enforcement agencies that help enforce federal immigration policies, to hiring a chief immigration enforcement officer.

Lawmakers said they were surprised that a special session would include immigration issues in Tennessee, but Gov. Bill Lee has now released his slate of policy hopes.
