The United States and Ukraine have agreed terms on a minerals deal that is central to Kyiv's push to win U.S. support as President Donald Trump seeks to rapidly end the war with Russia, two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday.

Mr. Trump has long demanded that NATO and other allies contribute more to their own defense. But the minerals agreement would represent a major escalation in his transactional approach to foreign policy. The United States was once seen as the world’s policeman, but to many analysts it now seems more like an extortionate Mafia kingpin.

Russia wants a long-term peace deal over Ukraine that tackles what it regards as the root causes of the conflict and not a quick U.S.-backed ceasefire followed by a swift restart of fighting, a senior Russian diplomat told the RIA news agency.

In a setback for the Trump administration the assembly approved a European-backed Ukrainian resolution, which demands an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and calls Moscow’s aggression a violation of the U.

Putin's comments come on the same day that Trump said he was hopeful that Russia's war in Ukraine was nearing an endgame.
