St. Peter Chanel was built in 1956 by the Society of Mary in response to overcrowding in other Catholic diocesan high schools. The school opened in September 1957.
Peter Chanel was a French missionary priest, martyred on the Island of Wallis and Futuna, whose body lay in state in the chapel of Villa Maria in Sydney for two weeks en route to France.
