Stockton's McLeod Lake turned pink this week, as scientists dumped dye in the hope of figuring out why there are toxic algal blooms some years but not others.

Huntsville Water Manager Ron Gault said crews have flown drones over the line, used thermal imaging, and added dye to the water among other tests, but none of the tests have indicated a nearby leak.

There, they found an expansive system of caves complete with thermal springs. One chamber housed a massive body of water that measured 454 feet (138 m) in length and 138 feet (42 m) in width.

Researchers discovered the body of water—now the largest known underground thermal lake in the world—while investigating a column of steam rising from limestone.

Scientists calculate that the lake holds about 8,335 cubic meters of thermal mineral water. For comparison, an Olympic-size swimming pool holds 2,500 cubic meters .
