Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration has already signed at least $245 million in state contracts to set up and run the new immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades.

Several Florida nonprofits, medical professionals, public health experts and families impacted by the Alligator Alcatraz detention facility in the Everglades are calling for it to be shut down due to what they are calling inhumane conditions and environmental damage.

State contracts recently shared with Axios show how millions of taxpayer dollars were used to build Alligator Alcatraz, an immigration detention center in the middle of the Everglades, in just eight days.
