Public sector undertaking Coal India has deployed a high-capacity pump with a 500 GPM (gallons per minute) capacity to dewater the mine at Assam’s Dima Hasao district where efforts are on to search the trapped labourers.

Indian authorities have summoned the army to help rescue at least nine workers who are trapped inside a flooded coal mine in the country's northeastern Assam state.

Efforts to rescue eight people from a coal mine in Assam entered the fifth day on Friday, with Coal India installing a 500 GPM (gallons per minute) pump to dewater the mine, in which the people have been trapped since January 6.

GUWAHATI, India — At least nine workers are trapped inside a flooded coal mine in India’s northeastern Assam state, officials said Tuesday, as authorities summoned the army to help in the rescue operation.

Workers said over a dozen miners had been trapped after water from a nearby unused mine began to pour into the mine, with some miners managing to escape.

Several miners are trapped inside in a coal mine at 3 Kilo, Umrangso area since January 6. Reportedly, as of now only one body has been recovered from the mine, as teams from the Army and Navy work to rescue trapped miners.
