By making harsh, uncompromising demands in peace talks with Ukraine while continuing to pummel it with waves of missiles and drones, Russian President Vladimir Putin is sending a clear message: He will only accept a settlement on his terms and will keep fighting until they’re met.

Ukraine's president has questioned Russia's commitment to progressing peace talks after Moscow confirmed it was sending a team to talks in Istanbul on Monday. Russia is yet to send its negotiating proposals to Ukraine - a key demand by Kyiv.

Washington reiterated its willingness to keep Kyiv’s bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization off the table, in line with Moscow’s demands.
